Y-3 is treating us with another gripping tech-noir campaign film. For its Spring/Summer 2017 collection, the high-fashion athleisure label taps Sonic Union mix engineer Brian Goodheart, sound designer Owen Shearer and director Robert Broadhurst for a short film to demonstrate the garments in action. Filmed in Brooklyn’s Newtown Waste Treatment Plant, the sleek short reveals a dystopian world that resonates with Y-3′s minimalist color palette and futuristic utilitarian aesthetic.
“The SS17 collection has such a specific cinematic feeling that all I wanted to do was build a beautiful world around it and let it emanate this strange and hopefully entertaining story,” commented director Robert Broadhurst on the creative process of the film. Under the creative direction of Blackrose NYC, the campaign film also investigates social and political hierarchies and the viability of privacy in an over-surveilled world. “It was exciting to explore some of the contemporary anxieties that I find really enrich Yohji Yamamoto‘s famous notion of ‘clothing as armor.’ And, as with all things sci-fi, the sound design and mix were particularly vital to the film. Brian worked his magic to elevate it beyond the high standard we had achieved the last time around and once again helped refine story through sound.”
